Garden project: garden on the roof

Roofs are ideal areas for creating green spaces in the city, especially if your apartment does not have a traditional garden on the ground floor.

Nothing forbids, of course, to have both!

For example, you might be among the lucky ones who have enough space for one or the other, because the building already has a roof suitable for the purpose, or because an extension of the house, to make a garage or an extra room, there it is giving you the opportunity to make your ideal hanging garden.

Garden project on the roof

✓ The robust base structure to support the weight of plants in the containers also works as an insulator.

✓ The solidity of the perimeter fence or balustrade protects from looks and bad weather.

✓ Effective drainage is as efficient as a tile roof.

✓ Extra space is created for entertainment and relaxation.

✓ Plants screen an unpleasant panorama or enhance a belvedere.

Trees in a container With a minimum of care and attention as well as a sturdy floor, you can grow in a container also some tree species, giving a vertical dimension to your hanging garden.

If possible, use wheeled containers to make it easier to move when needed.

Trees can shield unpleasant landscapes or frame a beautiful view.
Assito The wooden plank is ideal for covering the floor of a hanging garden.

Relatively light, it can be laid directly on the supporting structure without too many preparations. Create different patterns, also using other materials, to create abstract or classic patterns, and apply colored stain to make them more pleasant.

The right plants

The selection of species that you can include is limited, so make sure that the plants are suitable and that they remain interesting for a long time.

Evergreen shrubs guarantee color all year round and many herbaceous plants are beautiful both in the vegetative season and in the late autumn or winter, thanks to the variations in color of the foliage or to particular shapes of their fruits.

At the foot of the individual large shrubs planted small perennial and dwarf bulbous, in order to make the most of all the little space available.

The ideal plants

As most of the vegetation will have to grow in containers or raised flowerbeds, you can choose the most suitable type of soil for each plant, such as substrates with heather to grow rhododendrons or summer flowering azaleas, for example.

This scheme includes a limited number of plants (on the other hand, except for very large gardens, too lush vegetation does not have much sense); those you choose, therefore, must be optimal and have some or all of the following requirements:

• Evergreen, to give color in winter.

• Resistance to the wind.

• Resistance to heat and periods of drought.

• Long flowering period. • Interesting foliage or habit.

• Adapt to growth in containers.
